Lycopene is a phytochemical found in tomatoes, papaya ,red carrots, water melon etc.It is a carotene and has shot into the fame for its role in chemoprevention.
Its concentration increase in the vegetables after processing and cooking unlike the Vitamins(Vit c).It is found four times more in the tomato paste than in fresh tomatoes.
It has strong antioxidant properties. Its antioxidant property has been found to be more than the Vit E and Glutathione. It is also found to be effective in preventing human cancer cell proliferation. It is tried in many diseases like prostate cancer, diabetes, stress, and male infertility.
Excess consumption of lycopene does not lead to any toxic complications but can cause yellow discoloration of organs and the skin(lycopenodermia) .
We routinely prescribe lycopene in Ramayya Pramila Hospitals for two sets of patients:
Male infertility:
Idiopathic Oligoasthenoteratospermia is supposed to the result of increased oxidative stress .There are many hospitals who test Reactive Oxygen Species testing to quantify the oxidative stress. The lycopene can help in reducing the oxidative stress and thus help in improving the sperm count.
Prostate cancer:
Lycopene has been found to inhibit the androgen receptor cell expression in vitro. Thus has a role in cancer prevention and also as supplement in cancer treatment
We usually give Lycopene supplementation along with Docetaxel administration ( to amplify the effect of Docetaxel chemotherapy). We also continue the prednisolone therapy.
It is been found to be effective as chemopreventive strategy as per the study conducted on Seventh Day Adventist Church .
Thanks for sharing the benefits of tomato .which helps to increase the sperm count in male. There are so many fruit and veg available in the market which increase the male fertility .
