Metabolic syndrome is conglomeration of certain risk factors/traits which increase the incidence of the cardiovascular diseases and stroke.
CHARACTERISTIC SHAPE OF A PATIENT WITH METABOLIC SYNDROME WITH WAIST DIAMETER MORE THAN HIP |
There has been a global trend in decrease in infectious disease prevalence and rise in cardiovascular disease and diabetes. So much so that the prevalence of metabolic syndrome is slated to be around 25% in US and around 20% in India.
India is poised to become the diabetic capital of india. In India; the incidence of men having metabolic syndrome is higher in men than women.( almost double).
Change of life style, urbanisation, obesity and increased incidence of diabetes have contributed to the rise in this syndrome in India. This syndrome is found in age group of 41-60 years and therefore its necessary to diagnose them and take preventive and curative measures in this high risk group before they develop incapacitating complications.
INCREASED WAIST TO HIP DIAMETER CARRIES A HIGH RISK FOR CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASES |
It has been noted that even the kids have tendency to acquire this syndrome. If a kid of 8 years develops metabolic syndrome then its likely that the same kid will develop cardiac comorbidities with 10 years.
Urological Implications:
The metabolic syndrome patients have a higher risk of dying from prostate cancer. In a study conducted in Sweden.Out of 289866 people of metabolic syndrome enrolled in a study at Umea University at Sweden 961 people died out 6673 people diagnosed with prostate cancer. It has been noted that the people having high BMI have around 36% more chance dying from prostate cancer.
Obesity has been shown to be associated with a state of low-grade chronic inflammation, and insulin resistance and the metabolic syndrome are associated with adverse metabolic profiles and with higher circulating concentrations of inflammation-related markers, including leptin, interleukin-6, and tumor necrosis factor-α, many of which have been shown to enhance tumor growth. This makes them prone to develop various malignancies.
Not only prostatic malignancy even the benign prostatic hyperplasia and LUTS have been correlated with the metabolic syndrome. The prostate volume is directly proportional to the presence and degree of metabolic syndrome( measured by inflammatory factors).
Hence recognising the underlying metabolic syndrome and treating them and instituting the proper life style modification can alleviate the LUTS and act as chemopreventive measure against development of prostate cancer.
LIFE STYLE MODIFICATION CAN GO A HIGH WAY IN PREVENTING VARIOUS COMPLICATIONS OF METABOLIC SYNDROME |
Thanks for sharing the information about the metabolic syndrome . Most of the people are face the problem of metabolic .
