WHY A PATIENT NEEDS ANAESTHESIOLOGIST?

Anaesthesiologist is a doctor after finishing M.B.B.S, opts for post graduation in Anaesthesia and critical care.He completes 3 years of vigorous training in Operation theater (OT) and Intensive Care Unit (ICU) under guidance of experts in the field. He is now qualified to manage anaesthetic administration for surgeries in O.T, for painful procedures in endoscopy suites,in diagnostic areas like MRI,CTScan etc.

The basic role of anaesthesiologist is to reduce the anxiety associated with any procedure the patient is advised to undergo either in operation theater or  in outside area like ICU,Endoscopy suite,Cathlab,CT or MRI.Anxiety and pain are two universal feelings one cannot avoid as long as we live from new born till end stage of life. With good anaesthetic drugs and techniques it is possible to make ALL procedures painfree and comfortable experience to both patient and family members as well.

The role of anaesthesiologist begins much before the actual procedure/surgery.He reviews the patients basic medical record to note/detect functioning status of all organ systems of the body.He explains the outline of the procedure and assures him about smooth conduct of the procedure, this is called PAC(Pre Anaesthesia Checkup). After written informed consent the patient will be taken up for procedure with no risk/mild risk/moderate risk or high risk depending on the condition and severity of the disease.
An i.v cannula is a basic requirement where a (usually) a small 22g plastic venflon is placed under aseptic precautions. This cannula is like a small pin prick usually tolerated by all except small babies who will be under light inhalational sedation prior to i.v. cannulation.

The patient will then be put to light sedation for minor procedures, general anaesthesia for major procedures. The patient is awakened  from sleep(artificial) at the end of the procedure without remembering anything related to the painful procedure. He is monitored throughout the procedure for changes in heart rate, blood pressure, oxygen saturation along with many other parameters.
Thus ensuring the safety of the patient during the procedure, the anaesthesiologist also takes care of the patient in post procedure area till he is stabilised and out of danger.
